But if I didn't have my PC, I would have been stuck. The only solution I found was using Windows to convert AVCHD to MP4. Even if iMovie doesn't edit AVCHD natively (which it should by now), I would have been satisfied if it could at least convert it to Quicktime format.

I tried to install on a newer system and different issues come up. All of a sudden, the product does not work.

These camcorders have been around for several years. It works very well and has far superior quality etc than the 40 DVDxDV product I just downloaded to major disappointment.

The other suprise was the inability to recognize AVCHD. So simple and the output quality is outstanding. I had to return to Windows and Pinnacle Studio - which imported my DVD directly, created clips, and dumped into a timeline in 1 step. I don't want to go around scrambling looking for a list of steps and non-Apple converters, or the right ripper to buy on a bunch of cheesy websites, just to import a DVD I created years ago. I am finding the opposite is true.įor example, iMovie which is a paid add-on should be able to support the simple task of importing a DVD. I bought a MacBook assuming it was better than Windows in handling video. I am new to OS X and this was a suprise to me as well. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required. To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal. Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. (unless you are running Lion in which case see below))įor the benefit of others who may read this thread: Which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin : You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle.
